Meditation and Depression

Depression is a debilitating illness that affects most of us at some point in our life. According to the Mental Health Foundation, 1 in 4 people will experience some kind of mental health problem in the course of a year in the UK alone. Depression is the most common mental health problem and has a huge impact on people’s ability to get on with life.

Although treating depression medication is usually effective, can be difficult to come off anti-depressants without suffering a relapse. Different forms of counselling and cognitive behaviour therapy are very effective along with alprazolam pill, but you can often help aid your recovery by yourself too. Therefore, alongside medication, it is recommended to turn to other forms of self-help, such as:

Meditations can a powerful natural treatment for depression, as it can help develop an detachment from your thought processes and emotions.

Psychologists from the University of Exeter recently published a study into the effectiveness in treating depression with “mindfulness-based cognitive therapy” (MBCT).

The MBCT technique revolves around a type of meditation based on mindfulness and focusing on your breathing.

The idea is that you come to realize that thoughts come and go of their own accord, and that your conscious self is distinct from your thoughts.

The essence of mindfulness is deceptively simple: you try to become a detached observer of your own feelings and thoughts.

Meditation takes practice and focus and there’s no better way to develop meditation techniques than going a series of meditation retreats.
